Sarah E. Fraser, Prof. Dr.

Prof. Dr. Sarah E. Fraser is Lehrstuhlinhaberin (Chair Professor) and Director, Institute of East Asian Art History (IKO), Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. In 2019-2022 she was appointed Changjiang Visiting Scholar, College of Arts, Sichuan University, and most recently as a Taihe Fellow at The Palace Museum, Beijing (2023) and Beinecke Senior Visiting Fellow, National Gallery of Art (CASVA), Washington, D.C., 2024.

Her research and digital humanities projects include Buddhist and photographic topics focused on northwest China, Inner Asia, and 20th century wartime archaeology, and artistic practice. She served as Project Director, Mellon International Dunhuang Archive, Northwestern University in collaboration with the Dunhuang Research Institute (1999-2004). From 2014-2018 Fraser directed an IKO collaboration with the Dresden State Museums investigating eighteenth-century transcultural exchanges between the Sachsen Court, Jingdezhen kilns, and the impact of porcelain and prints on later nineteenth-century photographic mediums, culminating in Cross Media Women: East Asian Photography, Prints, and Porcelain in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Heidelberg: Arthistoricum, 2021)A related exhibit Dresden • Europa • Welt was held in 2017 with the Kupferstich-Kabinett in the Residenzschloss, Dresden.

She is currently finishing a monograph on twentieth-century Dunhuang and historical memory addressing issues of modernity and modes of resistance in the context of cultural heritage preservation during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945).

Her award-winning study on artistic practice in medieval Dunhuang Performing the Visual: The Practice of Buddhist Wall Painting in China and Central Asia, 618‐960 (Stanford University Press, 2004)will be published in Chinese this fall by Peking University Press.

Prof. Fraser’s research extends to the 21st century; in 2020 she co-edited a collection of essays on contemporary experimental ink,  Xu Bing: After the Book from the Sky (Singapore: Springer, 2020).
