Vernissage "Unframed: The Sigg Collection goes Virtual"

Unframed: The Sigg Collection goes Virtual

Virtual Reality display of works from the Sigg Collection in Kunstmatrix

On 8 June 2026, the Chair of East Asian Art History (KGOA) at the University of Zurich will host the vernissage of Unframed: The Sigg Collection Goes Virtual, an experimental digital exhibition developed by BA and MA students as part of the seminar Methods in Digital (Art) Curation: The Sigg Collection.

Over the course of the semester, students engaged with 48 artworks from Dr. Uli Sigg’s renowned collection of Chinese contemporary art, generously made available by him for this curatorial project. Through three innovative methodologies: virtual reality, spatial narrative mapping, and augmented reality, students explored both the opportunities and the limits offered by digital curation practices.

Unframed is both a public presentation of these experimental student exhibitions and a broader reflection on the role of digital curation within the contemporary cultural sector. The event will feature talks by Dr. Uli Sigg, collector and curator of Chinese contemporary art; Prof. Dr. Sarah Kenderdine, internationally renowned expert in digital museology; Prof. Dr. Ewa Machotka, Chair of East Asian Art History at UZH; and Dr. Stephanie Santschi, creator and instructor of the course and a postdoctoral fellow at the Chair of East Asian Art History.

The event is open to students and the public, but registration is required.
